SUPERFECUNDATION AND SUPERFETATION

Image
Do you know that there is a biological explanation for the famous twins with different skin colors? The biology behind them is superfecundation. WHAT IS SUPERFECUNDATION  It is the fertilization of two or more ova from the same cycle by sperm from separate acts of sexual intercourse, which can lead to twin babies from two separate biological fathers . There are two types of superfecundation: 1.     Homopaternal superfecundation : This is the fertilization of two separate ova from the same father, leading to fraternal twins . 2.     Heteropaternal superfecundation : This is a form of atypical twinning where, genetically, the twins are half siblings – sharing the same mother, but with different fathers . Sperm cells can live inside a female’s body for up to five days, and once ovulation occurs, the egg remains viable for 12–48 hours before it begins to disintegrate . Superfecundation most commonly happens within hours or days of the first instance of fertilization with ova rele

MEDICAL MYTHS DEBUNKED

Image
INTRODUCTION I was speaking to a woman who complained that her daughter was uncontrollably passing stool containing blood and mucus. She was quite worried, and we were exploring her options of what could be wrong with her little baby. All of a sudden, she said, “Or did my baby consume sperm? But I haven’t done anything with my husband for a while now. Besides, I am in my period and, my baby has not suckled my breast for like two days now”. Hmmm, I was dumbfounded. I was literally confused and amused (even though it was not funny). There was a feeling of pity and utter confusion within me. Yes, I felt pity for the woman who was so confused and vulnerable to believe anything. Maybe it was not her fault because of her state of mind at that moment. Whatever the case was, I was just lost in her words. Anyway, let’s talk about the main point of this particular post. Is it just possible for us to ‘not spread’ information we are not certain of, especially when it comes to medical infor

INFATUATION

Love stories are meant to have happy endings, right? Cause love they say is a beautiful thing. Well, maybe they should have been more realistic with that. Because Halima, a beautiful, bright, young woman learned the hard way.  She just turned 16. She was very enthusiastic about life and had beautiful dreams and plans for herself. So far, her life had been going quit well, with few struggles especially academics but she somehow had managed to overcome them all, though with the help of her parents whom she cherished very much. Then, all of a sudden with a single stare, her entire life was transformed forever. If only she never went to the store that faithful day. It was his gaze that caught her off guard. Those beautiful puppy eyes could bring any girl to her knees. The structure of his face was just remarkable.  And those supple lips.  “Miss” Halima was jolted back to reality and that was when she realized that her mouth had been wide open all along. She could feel a little sa

A TEEN'S STORY

When I was 12, I ran away from home. I had no idea where I was going. I just wanted to disappear and start another life somewhere new. I still laugh when I remember that😂 There’s this pressure that comes with being an adolescent. And I think the stage of adolescence is the toughest and most delicate stage in anyone’s life. This is when most mistakes are made. Being an adolescent is even tougher than being an adult because as an adult you see more clearly to make some decisions whether they are wrong or right. But as an adolescent, everything is blurry, and life becomes so confusing. One hardly makes the right decisions at that stage. Dear parents, please be gentle with your teens. We’ve all been there, and we all can attest that it’s not a smooth ride. A toast to us all who made it through that stage, we are awesome✌💖 how tough was your adolescent age and how did you deal with it? share your lessons in the comment section.

HOW YOUR URINE SAVES YOU FROM STROKE

Image
HOW YOUR URINE SAVES YOU FROM STROKE Whenever you pee, just say “thank you Jesus” 😕 . Why? Do you know that not urinating can cause stroke? You probably didn’t know that right? Now, urinating removes about 25-30 grams of urea from your body every day. This prevents a medical condition known as UREMIA. Uremia is simply the presence of excess urea in the blood. So, what then is urea ? WHAT IS UREA               Urea is a chemical compound produced in the liver. It is produced from mostly ammonia and carbon dioxide. But urea is not the problem here as it can be considered nontoxic. The main problem is the chemical constituents of urea which are ammonia and carbon dioxide. These are extremely toxic to the system 😨. And because of the toxicity of these substances, they must be packaged to form urea and excreted via urine. Urea is one of the safest ways the body can excrete these substances. WHERE DOES AMMONIA COME FROM? Another question one might be tempted to ask is, where does

9 AMAZING FACTS OF THE HEART ORGAN

Image
ü    t he youngest person to receive heart surgery was only a minute old. She had a heart defect that many babies don’t survive. Her surgery was successful, but she’ll eventually need a heart transplant . ü    t he fairy fly, which is a kind of wasp, has the smallest heart of any living creature. The American pygmy shrew is the smallest mammal, but it has the fastest heartbeat at 1,200 beats per minute . ü     t he giraffe has a lopsided heart, with their left ventricle being thicker than the right. This is because the left side has to get blood up the giraffe’s long neck to reach their brain . ü    t he greatest  number of heart attacks occur each year on Christmas Day. The day after Christmas and New Year’s Day are close behind. More heart attacks happen on a Monday than any other day of the week . ü    Other than the cornea, every cell in the human body gets blood from the heart. There are 60,000 miles of blood vessels in your body. That’s enough to go around the worl

HEPATITIS B

Image
What is hepatitis b? It is simply an infection of the liver. As simple as those sounds, it’s quite dangerous. The liver is inflamed in the process of an attack by hepatitis B virus. It is worthy of note that a lot of substances whether endogenous (produced by the body) or exogenous (produced from substances from outside the body) pass through the liver for detoxification before excretion by excretory organs or uptake by the blood. This is one of the dangers of hepatitis B. So, if the liver which receives the highest quantity of blood in the body is inflamed, there will be no detoxification and one can only but imagine the quantity of toxins and poisons the body would accumulate and the disastrous effects that would have on the entire body system. Another danger of this is that the liver has the ability to function even when 80% of its cells are infected. So, it is difficult to detect at early stage.  Causes of hepatitis b Like I mentioned earlier, it is gotten from its virus. But i
